The School of Life Sciences (SLS), grew out of the Department of Biological Engineering (founded in 1949), and was finally established in 2004. It consists of five undergraduate programs (biological science, applied biological science, silkworm science and bio-pharmaceutical science), 15 master’s degree programs, one doctoral degree program (biology) and one post doctoral research station (biology). Since 2011, it has implemented the “Excellent Undergraduate Cultivation Plan”, an innovation experimental class where every student can have access to professional and individual instruction for their all-around development with the guidance of supervisors.
SLS has a proficient and competent team of teaching and research staff with 120 faculty members, including 20 professors, 36 associate professors, one national teaching group (applied biological science), one winner of National Outstanding Youth Funds, and two honored the title of “Wangjiang Scholar”. The school enrolls about 1,000 undergraduates, 300 postgraduates and 20 overseas students.
SLS enjoys many teaching and scientific facilities, which consist of one national agricultural bio-tech teaching center, one national innovation base of maize breeding, one provincial crop biology laboratory and other provincial laboratories and research centers. In the past five years, a number of major and key projects were undertaken by our school, including 50 projects funded by National Natural Science Foundation and 20 key projects at different levels, with a total research grant of 70 million yuan. The SLS has won several awards such as second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and other prizes at the national and provincial level. It has made great achievements in screening fine maize and cotton, and cultivating the new variety Huoshan Dendrobe. Also, faculties have published more than 200 SCI-cited papers in five years.
The school has set up relationships of cooperation and exchange with many universities, research institutions and companies at home and abroad, including Chicago University, The University of Tokyo, Peking University, Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
